Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop’s School is an independent, all gender college-preparatory day school for 800 students in grades six through twelve. The School is located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 9 to 1, Bishop’s is known for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while celebrating character development, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Last year’s applicant pool drew from 72 zip codes and 168 middle and high schools throughout San Diego County and beyond. Fifty-one percent of the student population self-identify as students of color. Additionally, over $5 million in need-based grants is awarded annually.

The Bishop’s School is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable High School Varsity Tennis Coach to start in February 2025. 

Summary Description: 

The head coach will lead and develop student-athletes in our varsity tennis program. Throughout the boys’ varsity season in the spring and the girls’ varsity season in the fall, the head coach will be responsible for planning and overseeing all aspects of varsity tennis practices and competitions, fostering individual skill development and team unity, and upholding the School’s mission and core values in all interactions with students, families, and colleagues.

The successful candidate will be a motivated, highly organized, and self-directed individual who can effectively multitask and handle a variety of matters independently in a professional, trustworthy and mature manner with tact, diplomacy, and appropriate judgment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success coaching students in grades 9-12
  • Ability to inspire and motivate
  • Deep knowledge of and commitment to adhering to relevant regulations and standards 
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and problem solving ability
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Certifications:

  • USTA Coaching Certification
  • NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching
  • First Aid and CPR Training and certification
  • NFHS Sudden Cardiac Arrest 
  • NFHS Concussion Training
  • NFHS Heat Illness Training

Skills & Abilities:

  • Dedicated work ethic and an approach that is proactive, responsible, reliable
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines
  • Knowledge of applicable team or individual rules
  • Demonstrated competitive coaching skills in the area of sporting specialty
  • Knowledge of strengthening and conditioning methods and techniques
  • Ability to actively collaborate with all School constituencies
  • Intermediate proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office, and a willingness to become proficient in new programs, learning management systems, collaboration and productivity apps as needed
  • Ability and willingness to embrace the special needs and requirements associated with an academic calendar and schedule which may necessitate fluctuations in workdays and hours
  • Ability to articulate and incorporate the School’s mission and and model the School’s values; integrity, compassion, inclusion, intellect, excellence and justice
  • Proactively support the athletics department and anticipate the needs of all constituencies

Essential Functions and Specific Duties:

  • Ensure compliance with applicable team or individual rules
  • Organize and lead daily practices
  • Run home matches using the School’s scoring system
  • Transport students in a school vehicle if necessary
  • Communicate with student athletes to understand their goals and ambitions
  • Assess the strengths of individual athletes and teach them to use them effectively and improve their overall skills.
  • Monitor and evaluate progress of student athletes
  • Keep records and documentation of and prepare appropriate reports
  • Other duties as assigned
