Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop’s School is an independent, all-gender college-preparatory day school for 800 students in grades six through twelve located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 9 to 1, Bishop’s is known for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while celebrating character development, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Last year’s applicant pool drew from 72 zip codes and 168 middle and high schools throughout San Diego County and beyond. Fifty-one percent of the student population self-identify as students of color. Additionally, over $4 million in need-based grants is awarded annually.

 

Anticipated Annualized Base Compensation: $160,000 - $180,000 

 

Position Summary Description  

The Bishop’s School seeks a full-time Dean of Faculty beginning no later than August 1, 2025. Candidates will have a background in faculty leadership, professional development, and fostering a culture of pedagogical excellence in an independent school setting. The Dean of Faculty plays a key role in supporting faculty well-being, professional growth, and instructional development across departments.

The Dean of Faculty will be committed to faculty mentorship, collaboration, and continuous improvement, working closely with department chairs, administrators, and colleagues to align teaching practices with the School’s mission and the model of the Bishop’s learner. Experience in faculty evaluation, recruitment, and retention, as well as a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ), is highly desirable. The Dean of Faculty will also partner with other administrators to develop and implement initiatives that enhance teaching and learning at Bishop’s, and collaborate with faculty to ensure a student-centered, inquiry-driven, and innovative academic environment.

As a key leader in the community, the Dean of Faculty communicates regularly with faculty, students  and fosters an engaged and collaborative faculty culture. In addition to administrative responsibilities, the Dean may teach a course and serve as a student advisor.

An Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • A bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.).  
  • An advanced degree in education (preferred).
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience as a teacher or in a similar leadership and/or supervisory role.
  • Motivated, highly organized, and a self-directed individual who can effectively multitask and handle a variety of matters independently in a professional, trustworthy and mature manner with tact, diplomacy, and appropriate judgment. 
  • Demonstrated academic leadership in the development and administration of curriculum, budget, personnel, and strategic planning.
  • Strong leadership skills; Strength in leading teams and creating a collaborative environment. 
  • Commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality. Must understand confidentiality of relevant information in accordance with school policies, as well as other applicable local, state and federal regulations. 
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, as well as active listening skills. 
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) in a diverse learning environment. 
  • Dedicated work ethic, time management, verbal, written language, and interpersonal skills.
  • Irrespective of own religious orientation, ability to support the School’s mission and values as a school founded in the Episcopal tradition.
  • Commitment to well-being as the foundation for growth.
