Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop’s School is an independent, all gender college-preparatory school for 800 students in grades six through twelve. The School is located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 9 to 1, Bishop’s is known for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while celebrating character development, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Last year’s applicant pool drew from 72 zip codes and 168 middle and high schools throughout San Diego County and beyond. Fifty-one percent of the student population self-identify as students of color. Additionally, over $4 million in need-based grants is awarded annually.

The Bishop’s School seeks substitute faculty members on an ongoing basis and based on current need.

Substitute faculty support continuity of learning by delivering prepared lesson plans in place of the absent teacher(s), offering meaningful instruction, and maintaining a positive and productive classroom environment. When covering prolonged absences, substitute faculty may be responsible for performing the essential functions of the teacher whose schedule they are covering. On occasion, substitute faculty may be asked to cover multiple teachers in a day. 

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills, sound judgment, flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to follow lesson plans while maintaining classroom expectations. The candidate should be comfortable working with students, supporting the School’s mission and values, and responding to a variety of classroom situations with composure and care.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Review lesson plans and prepare materials needed for scheduled classes
  • Take attendance in accordance with School procedures
  • Implement lesson plans and assignments as directed by the absent teacher
  • Maintain a respectful and productive learning environment through effective classroom management and pedagogical techniques, ensuring students are supervised at all times
  • Maintain a neat and orderly classroom, including pushing in chairs, picking up trash, and re-shelving books, as needed
  • Follow emergency procedures and evacuation routes for assigned classrooms
  • Follow School procedures for referring students with disciplinary concerns
  • Prepare a written summary of work completed and communicate any special situations or concerns to the absent teacher
  • Perform duties typically required of the absent teacher, such as lunch duty, as needed
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times with regard to students

Perform other duties as directed by the Head of School or the Head of School’s designee

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Ability to successfully complete state and federal back
  • Previous classroom experience in a non-supervised setting is preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to follow lesson plans accurately
  • Proficiency with widely used software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to support the School’s mission and values as a school founded in the Episcopal tradition, irrespective of one’s own religious orientation
  • Flexibility with the special needs associated with an academic calendar and schedule
  • Ability to remain professional and composed while handling multiple duties and situations simultaneously
  • Ability to respond with appropriate judgment

The anticipated compensation for this position is $25 per hour.
