Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop’s School is an independent, all gender college-preparatory day school for 800 students in grades six through twelve. The School is located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 9 to 1, Bishop’s is known for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while celebrating character development, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Last year’s applicant pool drew from 72 zip codes and 168 middle and high schools throughout San Diego County and beyond. The Bishop’s School is seeking a High School Girls' Varsity Basketball Coach for the 2026-27 season.
Summary Description:
The Bishop’s School is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable High School Girls’ Basketball Coach to lead and develop student-athletes in our girls’ basketball program. The coach will oversee all aspects of the program including practices, competitions, player development, and team culture. This position requires a commitment to fostering individual growth, teamwork, sportsmanship, and competitive excellence while upholding the School’s mission and core values in all interactions with students, families, and colleagues.
The successful candidate will be a motivated, highly organized, and self-directed individual who can effectively multitask and handle a variety of matters independently in a professional, trustworthy and mature manner with tact, diplomacy, and appropriate judgment.
Responsibilities Include:
- Ensure compliance with applicable team or individual rules
- Organize and lead daily practices
- Run home matches using the School’s scoring system
- Transport students in a school vehicle if necessary
- Communicate with student athletes to understand their goals and ambitions
- Assess the strengths of individual athletes and teach them to use them effectively and improve their overall skills.
- Monitor and evaluate progress of student athletes
- Keep records and documentation of and prepare appropriate reports
- Other duties as assigned

- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of the athletics department
- Experience coaching basketball; working with students in grades 6–12 preferred
- Ability to inspire and motivate student athletes
- Knowledge of basketball rules, strategies, and competition standards
- Demonstrated coaching and leadership skills in the sport of basketball
- Ability to build positive relationships with student-athletes, families, and colleagues
- Deep knowledge of and commitment to adhering to relevant regulations and standards
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong work ethic with a proactive, responsible, and reliable approach
- Knowledge of strength and conditioning principles appropriate for student-athletes
- Highly organized, self-directed, and able to manage multiple responsibilities effectively
- Ability to collaborate with members of the athletics department and the broader school community
- Intermediate proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office and willingness to learn new systems as needed
- Flexibility to work within an academic calendar that may require evening, weekend, and seasonal commitments
- Commitment to the School’s core values of integrity, compassion, inclusion, intellect, excellence, and justice
- Ability to anticipate and support the needs of student-athletes and the athletics department
- Excellent organizational and problem solving ability
- Valid driver’s license

- NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching
- First Aid and CPR Training and certification
- NFHS Sudden Cardiac Arrest
- NFHS Concussion Training
- NFHS Heat Illness Training
Anticipated compensation is $30 - $50 per hour, based on experience. The 2026-27 season schedule is November 7th - March 13th. Off season practices and training occur year round.
